Istanbul city break from the UK on a budget
Updated October 2026 · by the HopCheap team
Istanbul is a roughly 4-hour flight from the UK and gives you a huge city break — mosques, bazaars, the Bosphorus — at a lower daily cost than Paris or Rome.
Two airports: IST vs SAW
Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side is the Turkish Airlines hub, with flights from London and several UK regional airports. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side is the base for Pegasus and other low-cost carriers. Always compare both: a cheaper SAW fare may mean a longer transfer into the old city (Sultanahmet), so factor in the time and transport cost.

- Best balance: April–May and September–October — comfortable for walking.
- Cheapest: often November–March (excluding Christmas/New Year). It's cool and can be rainy, but sights are quieter.
- Summer: hot and busy; hotels cost more.
Entry
British citizens can currently visit Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Check the FCDO Turkey advice before you book.
Keeping costs down
- Buy an Istanbulkart (rechargeable transport card) for metro, trams, buses and the public ferries — a Bosphorus crossing on a public ferry is one of the city's cheapest great experiences.
- Stay in Sultanahmet for sights, or Kadıköy/Beşiktaş for better-value food and nightlife.
- Many mosques, including the Blue Mosque, are free to enter outside prayer times (dress modestly).
- Eat where locals eat: simit, döner, pide and lokanta canteens.
